The Zittauer Gebirge, tucked into Germany's southernmost corner of Saxony, hides a quiet wonderland of sandstone sculptures worn by millennia of wind and rain into unmistakable stalk-and-cap mushroom profiles. Around the village of Oybin, walkers move through sun-dappled forest to encounter these formations rising from the forest floor — some barely knee-high, others towering overhead. The rock surfaces are textured with layered striations and freckling of lichen in ochres and greys, lending each pillar a painterly quality. The relative stillness of the landscape — birdsong, rustling beech canopy, distant view of Oybin's ruined hilltop monastery — makes the experience feel intimate rather than spectacular.
