Aekingerzand
A rare inland sand drift in the northern Netherlands — an almost desert-like expanse of shifting dunes set against heathland and wide northern skies.
About this spectacle
Aekingerzand is one of the Netherlands' most striking inland sand drifts, a wind-sculpted expanse of open dunes embedded within the Drentsche Aa and Fochteloërveen landscape of the northern Netherlands. Visitors encounter broad sweeps of pale sand interrupted by sparse pioneer vegetation — mosses, lichens, and windswept grasses — that create a surprisingly raw, almost desert-like atmosphere in the heart of lowland Europe. The wide-open skies above the drift make for dramatic cloudscapes, and on windy days the surface itself shifts visibly, carrying fine grains in low rippling sheets. The surrounding heath and forest frame the sand area and draw walkers exploring the network of paths that thread through the reserve. Light is best in the low-angle hours of early morning or late afternoon, when shadows thrown across the dune ridges reveal subtle texture and colour.
