Zion Subway
A cylindrical slot canyon in Zion where hikers wade icy pools through a sculpted sandstone 'subway' tunnel glowing with reflected light.
About this spectacle
The Zion Subway is a slot canyon carved by the Left Fork of North Creek deep within Zion National Park, Utah. Hikers wade through cold, knee-to-chest-deep pools of water, scramble over smooth sandstone boulders, and squeeze through narrows where the canyon walls curve into a perfect cylindrical tunnel — the 'subway' that gives the route its name. The light filtering down through the curved sandstone glows in shades of amber, cream, and rust, reflecting off the still pools below. The route demands route-finding through stream channels, log jams, and optional rappels depending on the direction traveled. The surrounding canyon walls are streaked with desert varnish and draped in hanging gardens of ferns and wildflowers fed by seeping water. It is a fully immersive water-and-stone experience that rewards those prepared for cold water and technical terrain.
