Aammiq Wetland — Lebanon
Lebanon's largest freshwater wetland — a critical stopover for migratory birds on the Africa-Eurasia flyway.
About this spectacle
Aammiq Wetland is Lebanon's largest remaining freshwater wetland, nestled in the western Beqaa Valley. Visitors arrive to find shallow marshes fringed by reeds and open water reflecting the surrounding hills. The wetland pulses with life during migration seasons, when wading birds, ducks, and raptors crowd the shallows. In spring, the air fills with the calls of breeding warblers and herons, while autumn brings waves of migrating storks and harriers passing overhead. The flat, open landscape offers wide sightlines ideal for scanning flocks as they wheel in the early morning light. Even outside peak migration, the wetland supports resident wildlife including frogs, turtles, and waterfowl. The backdrop of the Beqaa plain and distant mountains adds visual scale to the experience.
