Yesos de Sorbas
A rare gypsum karst wilderness in Almería, Spain, where translucent selenite crystals and cave formations emerge from a semi-arid desert landscape.
About this spectacle
Yesos de Sorbas is a striking gypsum karst landscape in southeastern Spain, near the town of Sorbas in Almería province. Visitors walk through a surreal terrain sculpted by millennia of water dissolving gypsum rock, revealing translucent selenite crystals, collapsed sinkholes, dry riverbeds, and caves threaded with delicate formations. The semi-arid setting intensifies the visual drama: stark whites and ochres of the gypsum contrast with the deep-blue Andalusian sky and sparse desert scrub. Underground, some caves contain gypsum flowers, moonmilk, and rare speleothems found almost nowhere else in Europe. The silence is profound — broken only by wind and the occasional crunch of crystalline rock underfoot. This is a geological classroom and a photographer's study in light, texture, and mineral architecture.
