Wutachschlucht

About this spectacle

The Wutachschlucht is a dramatic 30-kilometre river gorge carved through the southern Black Forest, where the Wutach River winds between steep, moss-draped limestone and sandstone walls. Visitors walk along narrow trails hugging the canyon floor, accompanied by the constant rush and tumble of the river over boulders and through narrow chutes. The gorge is renowned for its rare and relict flora — ferns, orchids, and moisture-loving plants thrive in the cool, shadowed microclimate. Sunlight filters down in shifting columns through the overhanging canopy of beech, oak, and fir. The air is perpetually damp and cool, carrying the scent of wet stone and leaf litter. Wildlife is abundant but unobtrusive — dippers bob on midstream rocks, kingfishers flash along the water. The gorge feels genuinely wild and remote despite being accessible on foot, offering a sustained sense of immersion in untouched central European nature.
