Wolfsschlucht (Zwingenberg)
Forested rock cleft on the Neckar that inspired Weber''s ''Der Freischütz''.
About this spectacle
The Wolfsschlucht at Zwingenberg is a dramatic forested rock cleft carved by the Neckar River, where sheer sandstone walls rise steeply through dense woodland. Visitors walking through the gorge encounter shadowy overhangs, the sound of rushing water echoing off mossy stone, and a sense of enclosure that feels genuinely wild. Ferns cling to the cliff faces, and the filtered light through the tree canopy creates shifting patterns on the rock. The site is famed for inspiring Carl Maria von Weber's opera 'Der Freischütz', and the atmosphere of gothic, brooding nature that pervades the cleft makes that connection feel entirely believable. In autumn, the deciduous forest transforms the gorge walls with colour; in spring, the vegetation is lush and the stream runs full. It is a compact but evocative natural feature that rewards slow exploration on foot.
