Wimbachklamm
A narrow Bavarian limestone gorge where the Wimbach torrent thunders between dripping canyon walls, filling the air with roar and mist.
About this spectacle
Wimbachklamm is a river gorge in the Berchtesgaden Alps of Bavaria, Germany, where the Wimbach torrent carves through steep limestone walls. Visitors walk through a narrow canyon where the rushing water fills the air with a constant roar and cool mist, the walls rising close on either side. The confined space amplifies the sound of the current, and spray catches the light filtering down from above. Mosses and ferns cling to the damp rock faces, adding patches of vivid green against pale grey stone. The path follows the stream through sections of dramatic, sculpted rock before opening toward the wider Wimbachtal valley beyond. It is a sensory experience dominated by sound and cool air, offering a refreshing contrast to the alpine summer heat above.
