White Cliffs of Dover
England's most iconic chalk coastline — dazzling white cliffs dropping into the English Channel, visible from France on a clear day.
About this spectacle
Standing at the edge of the South Foreland or along the clifftop path, visitors are confronted with a wall of brilliant white chalk plunging more than 100 metres into the churning green-grey waters of the English Channel. The sheer brightness of the cliffs against a blue sky or stormy sea is genuinely startling. Seabirds — fulmars, guillemots, and kittiwakes — wheel and cry along the chalk face, nesting in narrow ledges. On clear days, the French coast shimmers on the horizon. The smell of salt and grass mingles with the constant wind off the Channel. The clifftop trail managed by the National Trust winds through downland meadows bursting with wildflowers in late spring and summer, offering unobstructed views both inland and across the Strait of Dover. The visual drama intensifies at dawn and dusk when the chalk glows warm amber before returning to brilliant white under full daylight.
