Standing before the Watzmann's dramatic east face as dawn breaks is one of the Bavarian Alps' most arresting experiences. The sheer limestone wall rises thousands of metres above the Berchtesgaden valley, and on clear mornings a sea of fog fills the basin below while the upper cliffs catch the first warm light of sunrise.
