Wattwanderung Cuxhaven–Neuwerk
8 km guided low-tide walk across the seabed of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea.
About this spectacle
At low tide, the North Sea retreats to reveal an otherworldly expanse of glistening mudflat stretching 8 kilometres between the mainland at Cuxhaven and the tiny island of Neuwerk. Guided by a licensed Wattführer, visitors squat through ankle-deep channels, feel the cold, sucking mud between their toes, and watch for wading birds probing the exposed seabed ahead. The air carries salt and the faint mineral tang of exposed sediment. Underfoot, the surface shifts between firm sand ridges and yielding silt, punctuated by mussel beds and lugworm casts. Across the vast flat horizon, Neuwerk's medieval lighthouse grows slowly larger with each step. Timing is everything: the group must cross before the tide turns, lending the walk a quiet urgency that concentrates the senses and makes the return of the sea—visible as a shimmering line on the horizon—all the more dramatic.
