Vulcano, the southernmost of the Aeolian Islands, offers one of the Mediterranean's most accessible active volcanic experiences. Visitors can hike to the rim of the Gran Cratere, where fumaroles hiss and belch clouds of sulfurous steam, staining the crater walls vivid yellows and oranges. The ground is warm underfoot, and the acrid smell of sulfur hangs in the air. From the summit, panoramic views sweep across the Aeolian archipelago, with Stromboli, Lipari, and sometimes Etna visible on clear days.
