Vintgar Gorge
A breathtaking limestone gorge near Bled where wooden walkways hover above churning turquoise rapids and lead to a roaring waterfall.
About this spectacle
Vintgar Gorge carves a dramatic 1.6-kilometre passage through sheer limestone cliffs near Bled in northwestern Slovenia. Wooden boardwalks and bridges cling to the canyon walls just above the rushing Radovna River, which churns through emerald pools, cascades over rapids, and plunges into the thundering Šum waterfall at the gorge's end. The sound of rushing water echoes off moss-draped rock faces overhead, while shafts of sunlight pierce the narrow canyon to illuminate the impossibly clear turquoise water below. Ferns and wildflowers sprout from every crevice, and the cool, mist-laden air provides welcome relief in summer. The entire walk follows a well-maintained wooden walkway system, making the dramatic scenery accessible to most visitors. Autumn brings golden foliage that frames the green pools, while spring sees the river at its most powerful and photogenic.
