Victoria Falls Devil's Pool — Zambia Zimbabwe

The Devil's Pool at the lip of Victoria Falls on the Zambian side — a natural rock pool at the very edge of the 108-metre drop, accessible by swimming from Livingstone Island in the dry season when water levels are low enough to allow safe entry — creates the world's most extreme and most accessible waterfall edge swimming experience. The pool's natural lip prevents swimmers from going over the edge while providing an unobstructed view straight down the falls' face, and the sensation of lying at the falls' lip with your head over the edge looking down 108 metres to the Zambezi's spray basin is one of the world's most visceral natural encounters. The dry season (August–October) low-water conditions that make Devil's Pool accessible coincide with the rainbow arc visible in the spray column all day, and the combination of the falls' thunder, the rainbow, and the physical impossibility of your position creates one of southern Africa's defining adventure-nature experiences.

About this spectacle

At the lip of Victoria Falls on the Zambian side, Devil's Pool is a natural rock basin perched at the very edge of a 108-metre drop into the Zambezi's spray basin below. Reached by swimming from Livingstone Island during the dry season low-water months of August through October, the pool's submerged rock lip holds swimmers safely at the precipice while leaving them free to peer directly over the falls' face. The air vibrates with the falls' continuous thunder, fine mist catches the dry-season light to project a full rainbow arc in the spray column, and the sensation of lying with your chin over the edge — nothing below but churning white water more than a hundred metres down — is genuinely vertiginous. The visual contrast between the calm, clear pool and the violence of the drop just beyond its rim gives the site an almost surreal quality. Morning visits deliver the best light and rainbow positioning. The experience is guided and swim-based, combining the physical thrill of open-water swimming with one of the most dramatic natural viewpoints on Earth.
