Vettisfossen is one of Norway's most celebrated free-falling waterfalls, plunging dramatically into the wild Utladalen valley in Vestland. Visitors who make the hike are rewarded with the roar and cold mist of a massive curtain of water crashing into the gorge below. The surrounding landscape is classic Norwegian highland scenery — rugged mountains, birch forest, and a remote valley that sees relatively few visitors. The walk in follows a riverside trail through lush terrain, and the closer you approach, the more the sound and spray dominate the senses. In late spring and early summer, snowmelt pushes the falls to their most powerful, turning the cascade into a thundering white column.
