About this spectacle

The Venta Rapid, known locally as Ventas Rumba, is widely regarded as the widest waterfall in Europe — a broad, low cascade where the Venta River spills across a shelf of exposed dolomite rock in a continuous curtain of white water. Visitors stand at river level or along the banks in Kuldīga and watch the water fan out across the full width of the channel, sometimes stretching over 200 metres. In spring, the spectacle gains a remarkable bonus: migrating fish — particularly lamprey and vimba — leap upstream through the cascading water, a phenomenon that draws both local crowds and photographers. The sound is a steady, encompassing rush rather than a roar. The surrounding townscape of Kuldīga, with its red-roofed buildings and old stone bridge, frames the scene beautifully. The water runs clearest in late summer but the flow is most dramatic after snowmelt. A short riverside promenade makes the rapid easily viewable from multiple angles.
