Velebit Mountain Range
Croatia's great limestone spine: wild karst ridges dropping dramatically to the Adriatic, offering some of the most panoramic coastal-mountain vistas in the Mediterranean.
About this spectacle
The Velebit Mountain Range stretches along Croatia's Adriatic coast, forming a dramatic limestone barrier between the continental interior and the sea. Visitors encounter a rugged karst landscape where sharp ridges, deep gorges, and rocky plateaus dominate the skyline. The range is bisected by Paklenica National Park and Northern Velebit National Park, offering trails through pine and beech forests that open suddenly onto sweeping views of the Dalmatian coast and offshore islands below. Wildflowers dot the alpine meadows in spring, while autumn colours transform the forest slopes. Wind is a constant companion — the fierce bura funnels through rocky passes with force that can knock you sideways. The silence on the high ridges, broken only by the wind and the occasional call of a bird of prey, makes the experience feel genuinely remote despite the park infrastructure.
