Estonia's tallest waterfall tumbles down a limestone cliff, transforming into a spectacular frozen ice column each winter.
About this spectacle
Valaste Waterfall is Estonia's tallest waterfall, cascading down a dramatic limestone cliff face on the Ida-Viru County coastline. Visitors hear the roar of falling water before they see it, emerging from forested paths to find a curtain of white water plunging into a mossy gorge below. The surrounding landscape is lush and green in summer, while winter transforms the falls into a spectacular frozen column of ice — a blue-white pillar that draws photographers from across the country. The viewing area sits close to the falls, allowing the fine mist to settle on skin and lenses alike. The surrounding klint escarpment adds geological drama to the scene, with exposed limestone strata framing the water. Spring snowmelt brings the highest water volumes and most thunderous displays, while the autumn forest adds warm color to the backdrop.
