About this spectacle

Turtle Reef sits in the waters off South Florida, near the northern reaches of the Florida Keys reef tract — one of the only living barrier coral reef systems in the continental United States. Visitors exploring by snorkel or scuba encounter coral formations hosting green and loggerhead sea turtles drifting through the current alongside reef fish, rays, and sponge gardens. The water is typically warm and clear, with sunlight filtering down in shifting columns through the shallows. The sensory experience is one of quiet immersion: the gentle sound of your own breathing, the flicker of parrotfish across brain coral, and the unhurried pace of turtles grazing on seagrass nearby. Visibility varies with weather and season, and calm days reward visitors with the closest encounters. Access is typically by boat from the Keys or from Homestead-area marinas.
