Turkey Run Sandstone Canyons
Ancient sandstone canyons carved by glacial meltwater cut dramatically through Indiana's flatlands, offering winding gorges and lush canyon floors.
About this spectacle
Turkey Run State Park's sandstone canyons invite visitors into a world carved by glacial meltwater over thousands of years. Narrow, shadowed gorges with towering rust-and-tan sandstone walls create a dramatic contrast with the surrounding Indiana flatlands. Visitors wade through cold, clear Sugar Creek tributaries, duck under overhanging ledges, and squeeze through tight slot-canyon passages. The canyon floors are carpeted with ferns and mosses, and the sound of dripping water echoes off smooth rock faces sculpted into sweeping curves. Mature hardwood forest crowns the canyon rims, turning brilliant orange and crimson in autumn. Each named trail traces a different canyon, revealing natural bridges, waterfalls after rain, and geological strata laid down in an ancient sea. The scale is intimate rather than monumental, rewarding those who slow down and look closely at the rock textures and micro-habitats.
