Trümmelbach Falls — Switzerland
Ten glacier-powered waterfalls thundering inside a mountain — the only glacial drainage system in Europe accessible to the public.
About this spectacle
Trümmelbach Falls is a series of ten glacier-fed waterfalls thundering through the inside of a mountain in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Visitors enter via a tunnel lift cut into the rock and walk along illuminated subterranean galleries, feeling the ground vibrate underfoot as millions of litres of meltwater crash through sculpted limestone channels. The noise is overwhelming — a constant, bone-deep roar — and the air is permanently cold and mist-laden. Floodlights pick out curtains of white water spiralling through corkscrew gorges at close range, an experience impossible to find at any outdoor waterfall. The combination of geological drama, industrial-scale water volume, and intimate underground access makes this unlike any other waterfall encounter in the Alps.
