About this spectacle

On 22 July 2028, Queenstown will fall inside the path of totality for a total solar eclipse — one of nature's most dramatic and reliably awe-inspiring events. As the Moon's shadow races across the South Island, daylight will vanish in seconds, revealing the solar corona's ghostly white tendrils against a darkened midwinter sky. Temperatures will drop noticeably, birds may fall silent, and the brightest stars and planets will become visible in the middle of the day. The Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu provide a stunning foreground for photography. Totality lasts only a matter of minutes, making every second intensely focused. The surrounding alpine landscape of Otago amplifies the spectacle — the sudden darkness against snow-capped peaks and mirror-still lake water creates an unforgettable sensory contrast that no photograph fully captures.
