Tatzelwurm-Wasserfälle
Twin waterfalls in the Bavarian Alpine foothills, most dramatic in snowmelt season and hauntingly beautiful when partially frozen in winter.
About this spectacle
The Tatzelwurm-Wasserfälle are a pair of waterfalls tucked into the forested foothills of the Bavarian Alps near the Austrian border. Visitors follow a wooded trail to reach the falls, where the sound of rushing water grows steadily louder before the cascade comes into view, tumbling down a moss-lined rocky gorge. The lower fall is typically the most accessible, offering a close-up perspective of white water churning into a small pool. In spring and early summer, snowmelt swells the flow dramatically, and the surrounding beech and conifer forest is vivid green. In winter, partial icing can transform the falls into glittering curtains of ice. The light filters through the tree canopy, creating soft, diffused conditions that suit photography. The site is relatively intimate in scale — not a record-breaking drop, but a genuinely atmospheric and photogenic waterfall experience within easy reach of the Bavarian foothills.
