Tara Canyon
One of Europe's deepest canyons, the Tara cuts through Montenegro's Durmitor massif with sheer limestone walls and vivid turquoise waters.
About this spectacle
Tara Canyon carves a dramatic path through the Durmitor massif of Montenegro, its sheer limestone walls plunging hundreds of metres to the turquoise Tara River below. Standing at the canyon rim, visitors are struck by the vast vertical scale — forested ridges give way abruptly to bare rock faces that catch the shifting light throughout the day. The river itself runs cold and clear, its colour shifting from jade to deep blue depending on the sky and season. Rafting the Tara offers a ground-level perspective of the gorge walls towering overhead, while hiking trails along the rim reward with sweeping panoramic views. Spring snowmelt fills the river to its most dramatic volume, and autumn brings warm amber tones to the beech and pine forests that cling to the upper slopes. The silence of the canyon broken only by birdsong and rushing water gives the experience a genuinely remote feel despite accessible entry points.
