Tallulah Gorge
One of the Southeast's most dramatic gorges — nearly 1,000 feet deep with thundering waterfalls, suspension bridge views, and sheer quartzite cliffs.
About this spectacle
Tallulah Gorge carves nearly 1,000 feet deep through the Southern Appalachian mountains of northeast Georgia, revealing sheer quartzite walls streaked with mineral hues of grey, pink, and rust. The Tallulah River plunges through a series of dramatic falls within the chasm, filling the air with mist and the constant roar of cascading water. Suspension bridges span the gorge rim, offering vertigo-inducing views straight down into the canyon. Visitors hike rim trails through second-growth forest, catching glimpses of raptors riding thermals above the cliffs. The gorge floor is accessible by permit on weekends, where the river pools and boulders create a raw, primordial scene. Autumn brings fiery foliage that frames the rock walls in amber and crimson, while spring snowmelt intensifies the waterfall flow dramatically.
