About this spectacle

The Sternenpark Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal is a designated dark sky park straddling the forested hills and valleys of central Germany, where minimal light pollution reveals a sky that most urban Europeans never experience. On clear moonless nights, the Milky Way arches overhead in genuine splendour, with thousands of stars visible to the naked eye against velvet darkness. The surrounding Hainich beech forest — a UNESCO World Heritage site — adds a living foreground: the silhouettes of ancient trees framing the starfield. Observers can expect to hear owls and hear the forest settle into night silence while their eyes adapt. Amateur astronomers bring telescopes to pick out nebulae and star clusters; casual visitors simply lie back and let the sky do the work. The experience is quiet, unhurried, and deeply immersive — a reminder of how much light pollution has stolen from everyday life.
