Steamboat Geyser in Yellowstone National Park holds the title of the world's tallest active geyser, capable of sending water columns soaring far above the treeline in eruptions that dwarf Old Faithful. Standing at the Norris Geyser Basin, visitors feel a deep subsurface rumble before the major eruption begins, followed by a roaring column of water and steam that fills the basin with a thunderous roar and thick mist. Between major eruptions, Steamboat is in near-constant minor activity — hissing, spattering, and steaming — keeping observers on edge.
