About this spectacle

The Spreewald is a vast network of slow-moving channels threading beneath a cathedral of alder and willow canopy in the flat lowlands of Brandenburg. Punted wooden boats drift silently through corridors of green, while dappled light filters onto the water surface and reed banks. The forest floor stays cool and moist even in summer, humming with insects and birdsong. The spectacle reaches its most magical pitch in June, when fireflies emerge at dusk along the water edges, their cold green lights blinking rhythmically through the undergrowth — a rare and increasingly uncommon phenomenon in Central Europe. Visitors can explore the labyrinth of over 200 waterways by canoe, punt, or on foot along narrow dyke paths, discovering isolated hamlets like Lehde that remain accessible only by boat. The atmosphere shifts dramatically with season: spring brings lush new growth, summer delivers the fireflies and dense shade, and autumn turns the canopy gold.
