About this spectacle

Spearfish Canyon carves a dramatic limestone gorge through the Black Hills of South Dakota, where Spearfish Creek tumbles over cascades and past sheer canyon walls draped in seasonal color. In autumn, the canyon blazes with gold and orange as birch and aspen leaves turn, reflected in the clear, fast-moving creek below. Winter brings a quieter spectacle: ice formations cling to the canyon walls and frozen waterfalls crystallize along the roadside, drawing photographers and hikers alike. Spring runoff swells the creek, powering the canyon's waterfalls with renewed force. A scenic highway winds through the canyon, allowing visitors to pull over and absorb the sound of rushing water, the sight of hawk shadows crossing limestone faces, and the cool, pine-scented air of one of the Black Hills' most accessible wild corridors.
