Songnisan Munjangdae

About this spectacle

Munjangdae is the highest peak of Songnisan National Park in North Chungcheong Province, South Korea, rising above dense temperate forests of oak, maple, and pine. Visitors climbing toward the summit pass through layered woodland that blazes with autumn colour in October and November, and emerge onto rocky ridgelines with sweeping panoramas across the Sobaek Mountain Range. In spring, pale cherry and azalea blossoms soften the granite crags, while winter brings snow-draped silences and frosted tree branches that transform the ridge into a monochrome landscape. The path winds past weathered rock outcrops and occasional Buddhist temple rooftops visible far below in the valley, lending the scenery a distinctly Korean character. Birdsong fills the forest canopy in the warmer months, and on clear days the layers of blue-grey ridges stacking toward the horizon offer classic ink-wash painting vistas.
