Skógafoss Ice Winter — South Iceland
Skógafoss on Iceland's south coast — a 25-metre-wide, 60-metre-tall waterfall on the Skógá River — transforms in December and January when the spray zone freezes into an ice architecture of stalactites, ice curtains, and frozen splash formations around the base of the still-flowing falls. The waterfall itself runs year-round (the Skógá River is fed by glacial melt), but the surrounding spray zone creates ice formations only during brief extreme cold spells, producing a combination of flowing water and frozen architecture available for days to weeks each winter. The Fimmvörðuháls hiking trail beginning at Skógafoss leads up to the volcano between Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull, and the contrast between the accessible roadside waterfall at the trail's beginning and the volcanic landscape above gives Skógafoss an entry point quality that no other Icelandic waterfall provides.
About this spectacle
Standing at the base of Skógafoss in the depths of an Icelandic winter is a genuinely strange and beautiful experience. The waterfall itself never stops — the Skógá River runs year-round on glacial melt, sending a 25-metre-wide curtain of water plunging 60 metres into the gorge below. But when a sharp cold spell descends, the spray zone transforms: stalactites build downward from every ledge, ice curtains drape the rock walls, and frozen splash formations build up from the ground like crystalline cauliflower. The contrast between the thundering living water and the silent frozen architecture around it is what makes this a spectacle rather than simply a pretty waterfall. The air smells clean and cold, the roar fills the canyon, and fine mist catches light wherever it still moves. Visitors can approach very close on a flat, short path from the roadside car park. The experience lasts minutes or hours depending on appetite, and the Fimmvörðuháls trailhead here means the curious can continue upward toward volcanic terrain above.
