About this spectacle

Shifen Waterfall is often called the 'Niagara of Taiwan' — a curtain-style cascade that plunges roughly 20 metres in a wide, horseshoe-shaped veil rather than a narrow ribbon. Visitors approach along a trail that hugs the creek, with the roar growing louder as mist rises above the tree line. Up close, the sheer volume of water creates a cool, damp microclimate that feels refreshing even in Taiwan's humid summers. The falls are set in a steep, forested gorge in the Pingxi District of New Taipei City, and the surrounding scenery — moss-covered rocks, overhanging ferns, and the occasionally dramatic low clouds — adds depth to the experience. Natural light filters through the gorge walls, giving the best photographic results in the mid-morning hours before direct sun creates harsh shadows. The site is easily combined with a visit to the Shifen Old Street and the famous sky lantern launching tradition of the Pingxi area.
