Santorini Caldera Rim
One of the world's most iconic volcanic vistas: sheer caldera cliffs plunging into vivid blue Aegean waters, crowned by whitewashed villages.
About this spectacle
Standing on the rim of Santorini's ancient caldera, visitors look out across one of the world's most dramatic volcanic landscapes. The crescent-shaped island curves around a vast flooded caldera, its sheer white and ochre cliffs dropping hundreds of metres to the intensely blue Aegean below. Villages of whitewashed cubic buildings cling to the rim edge, their blue-domed churches punctuating the skyline. The air carries the faint scent of the sea, and the light — especially toward dusk — turns the cliffs into warm amber and gold. Small volcanic islands dot the caldera interior, reminders of the cataclysmic eruption that shaped this landscape. The view encompasses an extraordinary sweep of geology, sea, and sky, drawing visitors to watch the sun descend toward the horizon in a slow, luminous display.
