S'Albufera des Grau
A serene coastal lagoon at the heart of Menorca's Biosphere Reserve — mirror-still waters, dense reed beds, and abundant waterbirds in near-total tranquillity.
About this spectacle
S'Albufera des Grau is a coastal lagoon on the northeastern tip of Menorca, where still, mirror-flat waters reflect limestone cliffs and pine-fringed shores. The lagoon sits at the heart of Menorca's Biosphere Reserve, and visitors experience a hush broken only by the calls of waterbirds — grebes, ducks, herons, and occasionally osprey — drifting across reed beds and open water. The surrounding scrubland paths offer close encounters with the water's edge, where the interplay of salt and fresh water creates subtle colour shifts from turquoise to deep green. In calm mornings the surface is glassy and photogenic; in summer afternoons a warm haze settles over the reeds. The site rewards patient observation: the natural soundscape, the stillness, and the gradual revelation of wildlife make it feel genuinely apart from the Mediterranean tourist circuit just a few kilometres away.
