Sa Dragonera
A dragon-shaped limestone island off Mallorca's coast, with dramatic sea cliffs, clear waters, and outstanding views accessible only by boat.
About this spectacle
Sa Dragonera is a small, uninhabited island off the western tip of Mallorca, shaped unmistakably like a dragon lying in the sea — a silhouette that rewards photographers from the nearby coast of Sant Elm. The island's rugged limestone ridges rise sharply from the Mediterranean, cloaked in maquis scrub and punctuated by three historic lighthouses. Visitors arriving by small boat encounter dramatic cliff faces, rocky coves, and clear turquoise waters teeming with sea life. The absence of permanent human habitation means the island's natural quiet is striking: seabirds wheel overhead, and the scrub rustles with lizards and migratory songbirds. Walking trails wind along the spine of the island, offering sweeping views across the Tramuntana mountains on one side and the open sea on the other. The geological interest lies in its folded limestone formations and sea-eroded coastline, representative of the Balearic archipelago's Mesozoic bedrock.
