About this spectacle

Russell Falls is a tiered cascade tucked within the cool temperate rainforest of Mount Field National Park. Visitors follow a short, well-maintained path through towering swamp gums and tree ferns before the falls reveal themselves in three graceful tiers, the water tumbling over mossy sandstone shelves. The air is cool and moist year-round, carrying the scent of wet ferns and ancient bark. The sound builds gradually — a soft roar framed by birdsong — until the full curtain of water comes into view. Soft, diffuse light filters through the forest canopy, making this one of the most photogenic waterfalls in Australia. The surrounding understorey of endemic ferns and mosses glows vivid green after rain, and the reflections on the plunge pool invite long contemplation. It is a gentle, immersive experience accessible to almost any visitor.
