Ruacana Falls — Angola

About this spectacle

Ruacana Falls sits on the Kunene River at the border of Angola and Namibia, where the river plunges over a broad basalt escarpment in a wide curtain of whitewater. When the Kunene runs at full flood during the rainy season, the falls spread dramatically across the gorge, filling the air with mist and a deep, resonant roar. Outside the wet season, flow is heavily regulated by an upstream hydroelectric scheme, and the falls can reduce to a trickle or run nearly dry. Visitors who time their trip correctly experience one of southern Africa's most impressive seasonal water spectacles — a crashing wall of brown-green water tumbling into a rocky canyon, with spray drifting across the basalt rim. The remote Angolan side offers a wilder vantage, while the Namibian bank provides slightly more established access. Birdlife along the Kunene corridor adds to the experience for naturalists.
