Röthbachfall
Germany''s highest waterfall (470 m), south of the Obersee in Berchtesgaden NP.
About this spectacle
Röthbachfall plunges an extraordinary 470 metres down a sheer cliff face on the southern shore of the Obersee, making it Germany's tallest waterfall. Visitors reach it after a scenic walk along the lake, where the surrounding peaks of Berchtesgaden National Park rise steeply on all sides. The fall is most powerful in spring and early summer when snowmelt feeds the upper catchment, sending a white ribbon of water crashing through forested rock. Up close, the mist and roar fill the narrow valley floor. The remote setting keeps crowds lower than at more accessible Bavarian attractions, and the approach through old-growth forest adds to the sense of discovery. In dry summer months the flow can reduce significantly, but the cliff itself remains visually dramatic. Autumn brings colourful foliage to the lake shores, framing the waterfall beautifully for photography.
