About this spectacle

The Riesachfalls Cascades tumble through a steep alpine gorge in the Schladming-Dachstein region of Austria's Styria province. Visitors follow a trail alongside the rushing torrent, feeling the cool mist and hearing the thunderous roar of white water crashing over moss-covered limestone ledges. The cascades are fed by snowmelt from the surrounding peaks, meaning late spring and early summer bring the most dramatic volumes of water. Lush green vegetation clings to the rock faces, and the interplay of sunlight and spray creates fleeting rainbows on bright days. The path winds through mixed mountain forest, offering changing perspectives of the falls at multiple levels. In autumn, golden foliage frames the white water, while winter transforms parts of the gorge into icy formations. The experience rewards those who take their time, pausing at natural viewpoints to absorb the scale and energy of the cascading water.
