Powerscourt Waterfall — Ireland
Ireland's highest waterfall drops 121 metres through oak and beech woodland in the Wicklow hills — dramatic after rain, serene in dry spells.
About this spectacle
Powerscourt Waterfall plunges dramatically through a wooded valley in County Wicklow, forming the highest waterfall in Ireland and Britain. Visitors follow a short woodland path to reach the base, where the falls cascade roughly 121 metres over granite rock faces into a clear pool below. The sound builds as you approach — a deep, constant roar that fills the valley. Surrounding beech and oak woodland frames the white curtain of water, which shifts in character with rainfall: thundering after wet weather, more delicate in dry spells. The site sits within the Powerscourt Estate, a managed parkland setting that makes it accessible to a wide range of visitors. The pool at the base is popular with families. In winter, the falls can partially freeze in extreme cold, creating a striking contrast of ice and dark rock. It is a classic Irish landscape photograph, combining rushing water, ancient trees, and the soft green light characteristic of Wicklow.
