Poloniny Dark-Sky Park Dark-Sky Preserve — Slovakia
One of Central Europe's last genuinely dark skies, where the Milky Way blazes in full detail over ancient beechwood forest.
About this spectacle
Poloniny Dark-Sky Park in the far northeast corner of Slovakia offers some of the darkest naturally preserved skies in Central Europe. On moonless nights, visitors are rewarded with a dense, unpolluted Milky Way arching overhead, meteor showers rendered in full brilliance, and the faint shimmer of the zodiacal light. The surrounding Poloniny National Park — old-growth beechwood forest — absorbs ambient light and sound, creating an almost total sensory retreat. Temperatures drop sharply after sunset even in summer, so layering is essential. The rolling hills and open meadows provide unobstructed horizons in multiple directions, while the deep forest silence amplifies the feeling of remoteness. This is a site where the night sky feels truly three-dimensional, with naked-eye visibility reaching objects invisible from most of Europe.
