About this spectacle

Plateau Rosa sits at the head of the Zermatt ski area on the Swiss-Italian border, a high-altitude glacial plateau wrapped in permanent ice and snow. Visitors arrive by gondola or cable car to find a sweeping expanse of compacted glacier, ringed by the jagged peaks of the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, and the Breithorn. In summer the snowfields glow white under intense alpine sun while crevasse lines trace blue shadows across the ice. In winter the same terrain becomes one of Europe's highest ski runs, with powder drifting across the plateau in deep cold silence. The air is thin and crisp, and on clear days the panorama extends across dozens of peaks into France and Italy. Glacier retreat is visible over decades, with exposed rock edges marking former ice extents. Meltwater runnels carve temporary channels across the surface, and on warm afternoons the ice audibly pops and settles.
