Pink Salt Lake Hillier — Western Australia

Lake Hillier on Middle Island off Western Australia's south coast is one of the world's only permanently pink lakes — its vivid bubblegum pink colour (produced by the halophile microalgae Dunaliella salina, Halobacteria, and pink-pigmented bacteria in the hypersaline water) maintained year-round regardless of weather or season. The lake lies 600 metres from the Southern Ocean's deep blue, separated by a narrow white sand dune and green tea-tree forest, creating a colour combination of pink-white-blue visible from the air on every overflight between Albany and Esperance. Flightseeing over Archipelago of the Recherche from Esperance provides the aerial view that has made Lake Hillier one of Australia's most-photographed natural phenomena, and the complete colour contrast between the pink lake and the deep blue ocean from 300 metres altitude is one of the most extraordinary natural colour arrangements available from the air.

About this spectacle

From the air, Lake Hillier delivers one of nature's most surreal colour contrasts: a perfectly circular disc of bubblegum pink water, edged by a thin ribbon of white salt crust and a fringe of green tea-tree forest, set against the deep cobalt of the Southern Ocean just 600 metres away. The pink is not a trick of light — it persists year-round, driven by halophile microalgae Dunaliella salina, Halobacteria, and pink-pigmented bacteria thriving in the lake's hypersaline water. Flightseeing from Esperance is the primary way to take in the full spectacle, as the island's remote location limits ground access. At around 300 metres altitude, the tri-colour palette — pink lake, white dunes, blue ocean — fills a camera frame in a single shot. Morning light intensifies the contrast and reduces glare off the water. There is no gradual build-up or seasonal peak: every overflight delivers the same vivid, guaranteed result, making this one of the most reliably photogenic natural phenomena in Australia.
