Pictured Rocks Cliffs
Mineral-stained sandstone cliffs rising from Lake Superior, streaked with vivid reds, greens, and blues that shift with every hour of light.
About this spectacle
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore stretches along the southern shore of Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where sandstone cliffs rise dramatically from the cold blue water. Bands of mineral-stained rock—iron oxides producing reds and oranges, copper producing greens and blues—streak the cliff faces in vivid, unpredictable patterns that give the park its name. Waves have carved arches, caves, and alcoves into the base of the bluffs, while waterfalls tumble directly into the lake. In winter, ice formations turn the cliffs into curtains of frozen color. Sea kayakers paddle beneath the walls at water level, while hikers on the North Country Trail look down from the rim. The play of light changes the mood entirely: morning sun ignites the warm mineral tones, overcast skies deepen the blues and greens, and sunset casts everything in amber.
