Pico Aneto
The roof of the Pyrenees — Aneto's glacier crossing and summit panorama offer the range's most dramatic high-alpine experience.
About this spectacle
Standing at 3,404 metres, Pico Aneto is the highest peak in the Pyrenees, and reaching it demands a full commitment from those who attempt it. The approach crosses the Aneto Glacier — a shrinking but still active ice field that requires crampons and ice axe — before a final exposed ridge scramble leads to the summit cross. From the top, the view is staggering: a 360-degree panorama sweeping across the full spine of the Pyrenees, with France to the north and Spain rolling southward. Climbers hear the creak of ice underfoot, feel the bite of wind on exposed ridgelines, and often find themselves above a sea of cloud. The return journey retraces the glacier, demanding continued care on the descent. This is high-alpine terrain in every sense — demanding, rewarding, and genuinely wild.
