Partnachklamm
700 m gorge cut up to 80 m deep in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
About this spectacle
Partnachklamm is a dramatic limestone gorge carved up to 80 metres deep into the rock near Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the Bavarian Alps. Visitors walk a narrow path blasted directly into the cliff face, with the turquoise Partnach torrent roaring below. Water sprays from cascades, mist fills the air, and the canyon walls press close overhead, blocking much of the sky. In summer the cool, damp air offers relief from the heat; in winter the gorge transforms as waterfalls freeze into towering blue-green ice sculptures and the path becomes encrusted with frost. The constant rush of water echoes off sheer rock walls, creating an immersive, almost theatrical sound. Overhangs drip with moss and seeping springs, and shafts of light occasionally penetrate the narrow slit above. It is one of Bavaria's most striking gorge walks, accessible for much of the year.
