Parkstein Basalt Cone
Wall of hexagonal basalt at a former vent in the Upper Palatinate.
About this spectacle
The Parkstein Basalt Cone rises sharply above the gentle Bavarian landscape of the Upper Palatinate, its flanks revealing striking walls of near-perfect hexagonal basalt columns formed by the slow cooling of ancient volcanic lava. Visitors walk close to these geometric stone formations, touching column joints that slot together with almost architectural precision. The cone itself, a remnant volcanic vent, offers a short climb rewarded by panoramic views across the forested hills. The dark grey columns contrast vividly with surrounding vegetation, and the geometric regularity of the jointing creates a visually arresting scene at every angle. In low-angle morning or afternoon light, the facets of each column catch shadow and texture beautifully. The site is compact and quietly atmospheric, drawing geology enthusiasts and casual walkers alike who come to marvel at how nature carved something so orderly from molten rock.
