Paria Canyon Coyote Gulch — Utah Arizona USA

The Paria Canyon–Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness on the Utah-Arizona border contains the most extensive and pristine slot canyon system in North America — particularly Coyote Gulch, a 27-kilometre canyon tributary whose sandstone walls display hundreds of natural arches, Jacob Hamblin Arch and Coyote Natural Bridge among the finest in the Southwest, within a canyon whose walls shift from burgundy to cream to orange-red depending on light and season. The canyon floor alternates between sand washes, cottonwood groves, and stretches of narrow slot with overhanging walls, and the colour variations visible in a single day's hiking from dawn to dusk are exhausting in their beauty. Spring and autumn are optimal: the canyon runs dry enough for comfortable hiking while remaining cool; summer flash floods are genuine hazards, and the permit system protects the wilderness character that makes the experience distinctive.

About this spectacle

Coyote Gulch carves a 27-kilometre tributary through the Paria Canyon–Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness on the Utah-Arizona border, offering one of the most visually spectacular canyon hikes in North America. Sandstone walls shift through burgundy, cream, and orange-red as daylight moves across the rock — a chromatic display that changes hour by hour from dawn to dusk. Hikers pass through alternating terrain: open sand washes flanked by cottonwood groves, then sudden narrows where overhanging walls press close and light becomes indirect and golden. Jacob Hamblin Arch and Coyote Natural Bridge rank among the Southwest's finest natural spans, framing sky above the canyon corridor. Spring and autumn deliver the most comfortable conditions — creekbeds are manageable, temperatures moderate, and the colour contrasts at their sharpest. Summer brings genuine flash-flood risk. The wilderness permit system keeps crowds low, preserving a quality of solitude rare for a landscape this dramatic.
