About this spectacle

Otterlose Zand is a sand drift area located in the Veluwe region of the Netherlands, near Otterlo. Visitors encounter open sandy plains interspersed with sparse vegetation — a rare inland drift sand landscape in a densely populated country. The exposed sand shifts and ripples with the wind, creating ever-changing dune-like formations against a backdrop of heathland and forest edges. The open expanse offers wide sky views and a sense of wilderness unusual for the Dutch lowlands. Birdsong from surrounding heathland and the soft hiss of windblown sand characterize the soundscape. The landscape has a quiet, minimalist beauty — bleached sand, muted greens, and the play of light at low angles make it visually compelling in all seasons, though it is most dramatic on clear, breezy days.
