Oregon Caves
Walk through marble caverns in the Siskiyou Mountains, where millions of years of sculpted stone formations await beneath Oregon's old-growth forest.
About this spectacle
Oregon Caves National Monument offers visitors a rare subterranean journey through marble caverns carved over millions of years by slightly acidic groundwater. Inside, delicate formations line the walls and ceilings: stalactites hang like stone icicles, stalagmites rise from the floor, and flowstone drapes cascade in frozen ripples. The air inside stays cool and moist year-round, a sharp contrast to the forested Siskiyou Mountains above. Guided tours wind through narrow passages and chambers illuminated to reveal the cave's geological textures. Above ground, old-growth Douglas fir and tanoak forest surrounds the cave entrance, and the Caves Creek tumbles nearby. The experience is intimate and enclosed, with the sounds of dripping water and echoing footsteps accompanying the visual spectacle of ancient rock sculpture.
